This won't end well.
I'm sure all of you have seen the italian interview that has brought a pretty big info on Living Story - ANET plans to release one LS episode each 2-3 months. In comparison to previous biweekly plan, it seems like a huge change.
First of all, the mentioned biweekly schedule was impossible to keep because Anet had to take breaks to develop the content. Obviously, they're not machines and although the day has 24 hours, man can do only so much.
What am I talking about then? I'm talking about the trend I warned about long time before, when Anet has announced quarterly content updates and LS 3 coming in summer. People want new pve content. People have certain expectations. If we were to continue with the "biweekly" releases, we would know what to expect. But now, with apparently big content updates coming 4 times a year, people expect much more and rightly so. In my opinion, people expect even more because we wait so long for a new content (about 8 months if we'll get it in July).
I warned Anet that they will need to provide a HUGE chunk of content because of this. As if those expectations weren't big enough, Anet has (let's be frank) cancelled the legendary weapon development in order to use those people for LS3. They gave community another reason to expect even more.
And now an italian interview claims that we'll get a single episode each 2 or 3 months. If I am to be honest, I can't see the real possibility that Anet shall release a big enough content in the Summer patch that will make the community admit - Yes, it was worth the wait.
Why aren't you more optimistic? They did well with the Spring patch! - You may say.
For the Spring patch development, Anet has taken also all devs that were working on the second expansion to help the rest. That's 60-70 more people. These people weren't working on LS and it's quite certain that they don't work on it currently.
But they've been working on the LS3 for a long time!
Have they really? As I see it, after the HoT release they spent the rest of 2015 fixing the expansion bugs. That's also the reason why the Winter update hasn't brought much. So it seems pretty realistic estimate to say that they've been working on LS3 only in 2016. But that's not all. Oh no, they've admitted that they fully focused on the Spring patch in order to bring the most desired fixes and to bring HoT into more casual level.
Let's be optimistic and say that at least half of the current-content-team (more than 100 people) has been working on LS3 since the start of 2016 and then everybody or the majority besides the expansion devs were working on LS3. That gives us 3 full months + 4 months when only half of them worked on it, so let's divide them by half and we'll get 5 full months.
It seems like a lot maybe. Yeah for the good start of LS2 like LS3 start. I don't know about you but for a content update that would satisfy the community after such big content drought and with such high expectations, it seems like only a half of the needed time.
I'm sorry Anet but with your promises of LS after HoT, big content patches, cancelling feature in favor of LS development and now (probably) releasing one episode in 3 months, you've got into the position that doesn't seem very good to be in or easy to get out of.
After all this, I still have hope and believe in you that you deliver. Hope dies last. But realistically, I can already predict a very probable backlash and anger of the community when the released content won't be enough.
When.
And if.

GOLEMANCER - engineer elite specialization
Disclaimer: This is the wall of text that shall represent my idea of a possible engi elite spec. I know that it's very possibly unbalanced, OP or the opposite. The goal of this blogpost is to present a IMO very good idea of an elite mechanic for engineer. The Scrapper IMO lacked an elite mechanics that would change its way of playing. My idea is a Golemancer.
In this desperate times, Asura have let other races learn a lower form of golemancy. These new golemancers are unable to create golems, the secret of AI remains Asura’s knowledge but engis have learnt to use the circuitry and staff together with a pilotable golem suit.
Note: I chose the name Golemancer because if Charr lore-bound title Scrapper can be used by other races, then in my opinion, golemancy and Golemancer, or at least its lower form can be used by other races.
Kits are a special example here, since they don’t have cooldown and have 5 skills - a uniform lower charge percent is given from using one skill in a kit. After using one skill in a kit, other 4 kit skills don’t contribute charge. This way we can incentivize the use of other skills and skills with with higher cooldowns.
Also it offers at least some mostly non-painful attempt on motivating engineers to use kits less. Also IMO we need a two handed weapon because to create a good skills that would work with pistol or shield will be in my opinion much more difficult than creating skills for two handed weapon - hence the Staff.
Anyway, that one person that endured the boredom and wall of text and got here, congrats! You are the most patient person in the world. Cheers! :)
Lore Background
In this desperate times, Asura have let other races learn a lower form of golemancy. These new golemancers are unable to create golems, the secret of AI remains Asura’s knowledge but engis have learnt to use the circuitry and staff together with a pilotable golem suit.Note: I chose the name Golemancer because if Charr lore-bound title Scrapper can be used by other races, then in my opinion, golemancy and Golemancer, or at least its lower form can be used by other races.
Elite Mechanics
Engi gets a charging bar (0-100) on the left side of skillbar where the weapon swap is. Each used skill provides a certain one time charge percent to the charging bar. The higher cooldown of the skill – the bigger charge provided.Kits are a special example here, since they don’t have cooldown and have 5 skills - a uniform lower charge percent is given from using one skill in a kit. After using one skill in a kit, other 4 kit skills don’t contribute charge. This way we can incentivize the use of other skills and skills with with higher cooldowns.
Once the charge reaches 100, engi is able to summon golem suit that functions as a deathshroud – it gives player 5 new skills and a second healthpool for a limited time.
Golem suit has 3 variants according to the chosen T1 trait:
- Offensive – suit skills deal increased damage and give additional conditions, however player's movement is slowed down all the time while using the suit and gets increased damage from the back.
- Defensive – suit has doubled healthpool and it removes each 3. received Condition however its skills have lower dmg
- CC suit – suit skills get access to boon corrupt and soft CC together with one skill being a knockback, however its health is lower
Golem suit skills:
- Rapid fire: quick cone aoe attack, applies bleed
- Grenade launcher: aoe attack that explodes after impact, deals burn and blind
- Jetpack jump: jumps to a location and explodes dealing damage and stunning opponents
- Helicopter: whirl attack that reflects the projectiles and does a little damage
- Stasis: become invincible for a short time, applied regeneration
Skills:
Engi gets the Circuits a signet like skills.
Healing skill: Regen circuit Passive - applies stacking regen
Active – minor heal player and remove one applied cc
Utility skills: Might circuit Passive – applies stacking power
Active – double the might but shorten its duration in 2/3
Purge circuit Passive – remove a condition each 5 seconds
Active – give yourself a condi immunity for a time
Protection circuit Passive – apply 3s protection each 10 seconds
Active – aoe blind
Elite skill: Enhancement circuit Passive – each 15 seconds gives a percentage to the charge bar and 1 stack of Enhancement, after 10 stacks it halves the recharge of the next used skill
Active – recharge the next used skill instantly
Weapon – Staff
Staff is a medium range weapon that offers utility with solid damage. Each staff skill builds additional Charge.
Skills:
- Zap electrocute enemy, dealing damage
- Snap aoe attack around you, damages 5 enemies near
- Shortcircuit pulsing aoe that removes 5 boons from 5 enemies and does little damage
- Charger envelop you and allies around you in shocking aura, give them fury for 2 seconds
- Coil explosion set a remotely detonated mine that gives vulnerability to 5 enemies and roots them for a short time
Traits
Minor 1 – staff unlocked
Minor 2 – dodge builds charge
Minor 3- golem suit removes stun when activated
Major traits:
T1 – 1: Offensive – suit skills deal increased damage and gives additional conditions, however player is crippled all the time and gets increased damage from the back.
T1 – 2: Defensive – suit has double its normal healthpool and it removes each 3. Condition however its skills have lower dmg
T1 - 3: CC suit – suit skills get access to boon corrupt and soft CC together with one skill being a CC, however its health is lower
**********
T2 – 1: Using utility skill damages an opponent
T2 - 2: Using utility skill heals you
T2 – 3: Using utility skill blinds an opponent
**********
T3 – 1: entering the suit halves your boon duration but shares them with your allies
T3 – 2: entering the suit heals all party conditions
T3 – 3: entering the suit removes stun in your party
In conclusion
This elite specialization could be very interesting to play. It would offer a very different approach for playing an engineer and that's what I think we need now.
Cheers! :)

OPEN LETTER TO MIKE O'BRIEN
Mr. O'Brien,
Please bear with me, my intention is not to offend you with this, even if it may look so at first glance I just want to be honest with you.
Do you still seriously believe in your policy of not talking? Do you really think that it is the best possibility of interacting (more like not interacting) with your community?
I know, this is not new. Anet has always been prety tight-lipped about their future development. Or was it only after the famous "Looking ahead" blogpost from a couple of years ago that promised precursor hunt?
Nevermind. I don't know whether you fear the community's reaction so much, or more specifically you don't handle anything negative well, I still can't comprehend how you can think of not talking as being the best option.
You're missing out on so much feedback. Your community trusts you less and less as time passes by and we get only news about suspensions and delays. And you still believe that this is the way to go?
It may be an unfair assumption but I suspect that this is the reason why we don't have a public test server. Am I right? Please don't try that spoiler argument, we can handle spoilers and not spoiling stuff.
Let's get back to the point. You need to talk to your community. You need to be open. You need to handle feedback. Stop talking about the most friendly community, when you're afraid of some bad apples. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would prefer monthly blog updates of what you're working on, what we can look forward to, what problems occur in development and so on. We would handle negative news much better then, if we knew what's really going on and what's the reason behind them.
MO, your argument is that you want to talk less and delight us with what you're shipping out. I'm sorry, but you've shipped almost NOTHING after the launch of HoT. So what do you want us to be delighted about? I can understand that you probably spent the whole end of 2015 with fixing the HoT problems and the new development started only in 2016. In my opinion, if you were frank with us and told us where your development is, the community wouldn't expect that much at start.
On Tuesday, there comes the Spring quarterly patch. You said that the works on it are almost finished. You also said that you don't want to talk promises or visions or anything that's not ready. Why the hell don't you still talk about the patch, when you said that it's ready?
Don't you think that you contradict yourself with this? How can anybody trust you after this? How can anybody be optimistic about Guild Wars 2 future when in 5 months we got barely anything, we have no idea why and what's going on and you decide to talk even less.
I have 18 characters, no MMO out there is better than GW2 for me, I spent countless hours ingame, I even enjoyed that (according to you) "big amount" of content released with HoT. And yet I log in daily only to do daily now. Not even exploration and leveling of new chars entertains me anymore.
I'm sorry, I endured all the hate and negativity, I defended Anet and GW2 a lot but now even I can't find a good reason to spend more time ingame. If I knew what to look forward to, I'd have a huge motivation to be ingame. But now I can only grind either achievements, collections, mats, map currency, etc. Probably good thing that I play mostly pve as I hear complaints about other modes but this is not to be discussed here.
About two years ago, I started doing GW2 videos. Why? For many reasons. One of them was that I was bored ingame. We didn't have much new content then but at least we knew what's coming. Now I can't make myself to record anything, to edit anything, to finish any more videos. This situation is demotivating as hell. So I started with GW2 comic, it's fun but a lot of work and to be honest it's getting more difficult with current demotivating situation when I want to spend less time ingame and thinking of GW2 just so I don't think of this everything.
Personally, I still believe in Anet (there are so many talented and awesome people) and I that you take a chance to redeem yourselves in Summer patch. Persuade us that all that waiting, delays, suspensions and no communication were for something awesome. With so much overpromising and not delivering, you have a very hard challenge ahead of you.
Switching from promising too much to not wanting to talk about anything is not the way to go though. It's just jumping from extreme to extreme. How about finding a compromise?
Mr. O'Brien, I'm sure that we all want what's best for the game. Let's interact together and let us make the "delighting us with releases" easier - with content, open communication and constructive feedback.
I still believe in you. Please, do not prove me wrong.
Levi

Legendary noncontent (or delays, promises and development)
Some time ago, I wrote a blogpost, where I discussed whether Anet did promise too much to handle.
We have a new info now. And I can't say I'm very optimistic. It just seems to me that the bad news are piling up. Living Story 8 moths after HoT, Colin's leave and now we are told that we won't see new legendaries. Their development has been stopped until further notice.
This blogpost will be long and messy. You've been warned...
Legendary engame?
First of all, what do we know about the development of legendary weapons?
I can understand that the development takes so long, IMO mostly because of the collections. I think that to graphically design a legendary is not that difficult in comparison to making their collections work. I think that it takes a lot of testing. With 4 collections/each and let's say one collection could take 1 month, we would need a year for 3 new legendaries. Now I'm sure that the development doesn't take that long.
For many people, legendaries are the endgame. I myself am raiding from time to time. I have finished the first raid wing with my guild but still rather play alone at my own pace. That's why the legendaries are the second most important feature of GW2 for me after Living Story.
New legendaries were presented extensively before the launch of HoT. There was an uproar, when the community had discovered that we'll get only 3 new ones on launch. This was however promised to us together with the rest coming together with other releases.
6 man army
We were told that the 6 people, working on them, were moved back to the living story team. 6 other people are working on raids. In 5 months they managed to release 2 raid wings. Many people compare these 2 teams and ask how it's possible that one team delivers and other doesn't? I would agree with this question and would love to see into their creative process but it's not that easy. One team designs map, bosses, mechanics, rewards, etc. Other designs the weapon, effects and works with a lot of data to make the collections work. So I don't think it's comparable.
When we talk about the group of 6 developers it seems that they are able to deliver a lot of content (raid team) and therefore can possibly make a huge difference by adding them into the LS team.
This brings up the question: If 6 people are able to deliver, why do we see everything else being postponed? Mo has said that it's because they don't want to be teams to be too thin and they want the content to be out asap. This however hasn't answered the question. In the previous blogpost I expressed a fear of Anet "overpromising" and then being unable to deliver.
Promises, promises and again promises
As if promising too much wouldn't be enough, Anet has changed their release strategy from biweekly updates to quarterly releases. I'm all for this change, I think it's a good decision but it has one huge downside - people wil expect MUCH MORE from the 12-week release than from a biweekly release and rightly so.
This combined with too many promises is a ticking time bomb. First "boom" was the fractal backpiece that's still not fully ingame. Second one was the announcement of LS in summer release, which is about 7-8 months after HoT. And third one now was the stopping of the legendary weapon development.
Mo has said that he wants to stick to the manifesto and to deliver. That's great and all but now the Living Story will have to be so awesome to be worth all this or Anet won't get back their newly lost reputation. And that's what I fear the most. If the new living story won't be full of fun content that would make us admit "OK, I see, they needed those people to be able to deliver this awesome huge patch", I... I just don't know what to expect next and whether to expect anything anymore.
How about an expansion?
Yeah, we all know that 1/3 of all devs is already working on the new expansion. IMO, it would be better to postpone it and bring them to help with the development of the promised features. At least until the things settle down and the pace will get better.
I liked HoT. Most of the time I spent defending Anet. I actually liked the content brought with HoT. I even liked grinding masteries. Good thing that I don't play wvw much or else I would complain a lot. I guess. I played pve extensively. I made H.O.P.E. I even started playing much more pvp because there's nothing else new now besides legendary backpack. I liked the legendary collections. Now, I only log in to grind daily achievements for pvp and play story with GF just to see what she thinks about it.
For 3 years I was never bored. Now I am. Yesterday's news destroyed my optimism. I'm not even disappointed. I'm sad. When there are 300 people working on this and they struggle to deliver promised content then something is wrong. I'm sure that it's not their fault. I suspect that the management tries to reinvent the wheel, scraps often already finished things to recreate them and causes this mess.
But this is only my speculation. I know that Anet devs are awesome people that are passionate about GW2 and they love the game. I'm sure that they will do their best. Sometimes it's not enough sadly. Let's hope that it's not this case.
Anyway, now that I let it all out, I'm going to watch a movie, read a book or play something else while waiting for the new content. Hope dies the last, doesn't it?
